Problems Getting Pregnant

It can be very disappointing and frustrating for a couple when you have problems getting pregnant. It is important to know what is considered a normal timeframe when you are trying to conceive. Some mistakenly think they are having troubles or believe they may have fertility issues when pregnancy does not happen within the first few months. Typically, a healthy couple can expect to conceive within one year of trying in about 85% of cases. However, some will find a year comes and goes and there is no pregnancy. When this is the case, seeing a doctor to rule out any severe fertility issues may be necessary.

For those who do not have any fertility issues that will prevent them from getting pregnant, there still may be problems getting pregnant within a certain time frame. There are many things couples can do independently and together to overcome any minor fertility problems.

For both men and women, what you put into your body may be the culprit as far as fertility is concerned. Both smoking and over indulgence of alcohol take a harsh toll on fertility. Too much alcohol can diminish sperm count and also interfere with a woman’s normal cycle. If a woman’s cycle is off track because of alcohol, it can be next to impossible to predict ovulation correctly. Smoking can also interfere with sperm count and motility. Refraining from both can help you and your partner increase fertility and avoid any future problems getting pregnant.

Weight is also a major factor when it comes to getting pregnant. Studies have shown women who are either overweight or underweight have more difficulty conceiving. It is considered ideal to have a BMI of between 20 and 30. The man’s weight can also cause problems with fertility. Overweight men tend to have lower sperm counts due partly to an increase in body temperature around the testicles. This increase also occurs if the man wears clothing or briefs that are too tight. Keeping air flow through loose clothing and ideal weight can help a couple overcome problems getting pregnant.

Once both partners have their bodies in optimal shape and have done what they should to increase sperm count and have normal menstrual cycles, there are things to do together to increase chances of conception. For couples who are experiencing problems getting pregnant, learning about sexual positions that increase the chances of sperm of reaching the egg can help. Any position that helps achieve deeper penetration and aids in sperm staying in the cervix as long as possible is best. Missionary position and rear entry both help the process. Also, staying in a lying down position for a few minutes after intercourse is recommended. This keeps a minimal amount of sperm from escaping. Some say a pillow under the hips to further elevate the woman’s cervix increases the chance of sperm fertilizing the egg.

Having intercourse in the morning as opposed to evening is also one more tip for increasing your chances of conception. There is more sperm and even healthier sperm in the morning. For those who find sperm count is the obstacle, this may be the only adjustment needed.

For couples trying to conceive, it is important to seek medical help if pregnancy has not happened naturally over the course of a year. However, this does not mean there has to be a medical reason for your problems getting pregnant. More often than not, little lifestyle changes and these few helpful tips can be just the adaptation needed to achieve pregnancy.
